Ford F550 Trucks are The Worst   by M Hirst

We are Highland Hill Farm of Fountainville Pa. We deliver and sell trees and shrubs. Last year we bought 3 new F550 2007 and 2008 F550 trucks. These are diesels. These trucks are the worst set of vehicles we have ever purchased. They have spent weeks in the local Ford dealer for warranty work. Ford has performed the warranty work, yet what good is a warranty for trucks with so many issues that you loose confidence in using the trucks for our deliveries.

Here are some problems that in our opinion have cause for concern.... with ford Quality and Safety.

FEBRUARY 2008 -- Ford is recalling 87,515 MY 2008 F250, F350, F450, and F550 vehicles for failing to comply with all the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 207, "Seating Systems." Some 40% split and captain's chair driver's seats, equipped with lumbar supports, may have improper welds at the joint of the seat back pivot bracket and the seat back frame. In the event of a crash, the seat side pivot bracket may crack or break, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Dealers will add reinforcement to the driver's seat back frame on the 40% split or captain's chair seat equipped with lumbar support or, if necessary, the seat back frame will be replaced. The recall is expected to begin on or about March 24, 2008.

ON CERTAIN HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 7.3L DIESEL ENGINES, THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR LOCATED ON THE ENGINE OF THE VEHICLE MAY FUNCTION INTERMITTENTLY, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ENGINE STALL.

ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 6.4L DIESEL ENGINE, EXCESSIVE TEMPERATURES IN THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY RESULT FROM EXCESS HYDROCARBONS IN THE EXHAUST. LACK OF POWER OR ROUGH OPERATION, UNUSUAL NOISES FROM THE ENGINE OR EXHAUST, WHITE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST, AND POTENTIALLY A VISIBLE FLAME OUT THE TAILPIPE CAN OCCUR.

ON CERTAIN CHASSIS CAB TRUCKS, THE STEERING GEAR MAY HAVE SOME GEARS WITH A GEAR PISTON THAT WAS ASSEMBLED WITH AN INCORRECT RE-CIRCULATING BALL TUBE RETAINER. AN INCORRECT RETAINER MAY RESULT IN AN IMPROPERLY RETAINED RE-CIRCULATING BALL TUBE, WHICH MAY NOT KEEP THE RE-CIRCULATING BALLS IN PLACE DURING STEERING GEAR ACTUATION.
Consequence IF THE RE-CIRCULATING BALLS BECOME DISLODGED A VEHICLE OPERATOR MAY NOTICE NOISE AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORTS THAT MAY EVENTUALLY PROGRESS TO IMPAIRED STEERING OR POTENTIAL LOSS OF STEERING WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

It is always the time of year when one can appreciate the shade of a big, beautiful tree. Trees provide other benefits, too. They can block the wind, help clean the air, provide fruit and nuts, and create a friendly habitat for wildlife. And, trees make a great hideaway where kids can play.

On our farm we need reliable trucks. Ford F550 trucks are reliable for our tree farm opeations.

When I was in the young, I would go fishing along the Delaware River at night. I would camp along the river bank and fish into the wee hours of the night. I am always drifting back to those childhood memories when I pass a river birch tree that is highlighted by lights at night. The nigh time interest that this tree expresses can help capture moments for you.

The main feature of this medium sized spreading tree is its colorful peeling bark. This builds up on the stem and main branches in soft curling layers of orange, pink, Grey and brown. Another great advantage of this species is its tolerance of wet soil and seasonal flooding making it an ideal pond or riverbank tree. Specimens often develop multiple stems which increases the attractiveness its shaggy bark. As an ornamental tree it also has bright green, toothed leaves and long yellow clusters of catkins in early spring. It will have a spreading root system that will check erosion. It is hardy and will seldom blow down. The plant is native to the eastern states from Massachusetts to Florida. The range continues along the Gulf of Mexico and into Texas.

If you have had trouble planting a tree the River Birch is a choice that is easy to transplant. Many people consider this one of the easiest hardwood trees to transplant. They are adaptable and grow fast. These trees do not seem to be bothered by the Bronzed Birch Borer which has killed off many White Birches used in urban landscapes.

There are over 15000+ River Birch trees ready for you at our Doylestown Pa nursery. These include small seedlings and trees that range to up to 4" in caliber. Please note that the 4" caliper birches are "Heritage River Birches" and these separate the men from the boys. I want to remain a boy all my life. The 4" trees are huge and it takes a crew of at least 4 or 5 people to install one. These trees are the largest that we can handle and there are a few out in the rows that will need a digger larger than what our capacities enable us to dig. We can arrange for one of our sub contractors to dig and install if needed.

This is a general guide to videos I made about Arborvitae which are commonly used as for screens and buffers.

When you get to the nursery or garden center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium. Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root, that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old material from mail order companies since this material is more vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and burlapped. If you have Black Walnut trees consider using Arborvitae. The roots of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and Butternut (Juglans cinerea L.)are known to produce a substance known as juglone (5-hydroxy-alphanapthaquinone). There are many plants such as blackberry, blueberry, azalea, mountain laurel, rhododendron, white pine and apple may be injured or killed within one to two months of growth within the root zone of trees. The toxic zone from a mature tree occurs on average in a 60 foot radius from the trunk, but can be as far as 80 feet. The area affected extends outward each year as a tree enlarges. Many susceptible plants will be dead within the root zone and fail at the margins.

Not all plants are sensitive to juglone. Many trees, vines, shrubs, ground covers, annuals and perennials will grow in close proximity to a walnut tree. Arborvitae will grow near Walnut trees.
